1to1 Accountancy Services in Newport had an existing website. However they felt that it was need of a design refresh; and from a technical perspective it needed to be friendlier to mobile phones. In addition there was a desire to expand the range of content on the site including the addition of a blog. The plan with the blog was to release information on a regular basis that would be valuable to both existing and prospective clients. We also had to retain and re-use any valuable text from the first iteration of the website whilst making changes in use of images.
In order for this project to run smoothly it was decided to make a couple of staff key stake-holders in the sites development. Giving both myself and the rest of the 1to1 staff a central point of liaison.
The Feature Set
One of the nice things was that the specification led very quickly to a set of achievable features and targets. These were
- The site had to be mobile friendly
- It had to retain a proportion of original key text
- We had to make SEO a priority and include SEO tools.
- Menus had to be simple and expose the content of the site
- A knowledge centre was required
- The site needed to be able to support more than one type of page layout.
- A few interactive on page had to be included – such as the one on meet the staff.
I’m pleased to say that all of these points where successfully addressed.
The Production Process
We managed to keep the number of meetings down by drawing up lists of achievable targets and largely communicating via email. In addition to this during production time was taken to train the staff who would be updating the site. The training came in two forms. How to use the Content Management System. How to write for a website – including important considerations such as writing style and use of key-words.
As usual the site was developed in a test area.
In this design we had to spend some time importing and checking information from the original site. We did this via a database import.
Once the site was competed it went through a number of tests and proof-readings to confirm it was ready.
The plan with this website is continual development. The aim is for to not only represent its owners business but to become a valuable resource for small business owners in the South Wales Area.
